Surgical procedures

At Hôpital vétérinaire LaSalle, we provide a wide variety of surgical interventions for dogs and cats, such as elective surgery, emergency surgery, ocular surgery, and orthopedic surgery. Our state-of-the-art equipment allows us to perform laser surgery and cryosurgery.

What are the differences between the types of surgery?

Elective surgery includes procedures that are considered non-urgent and can be rescheduled if needed. For example, spaying and neutering are elective procedures. Emergency surgery, as it implies, describes interventions that must be done right away as they are needed to treat an urgent health problem. Examples of emergency procedures include removing porcupine quills, removing a foreign body, performing a C-section, correcting a urinary obstruction, etc. Ocular surgery includes the procedures performed on an animal’s eyes, such as cataract surgery. Lastly, orthopedic surgery is performed on an animal’s muscles, ligaments, or bones. This category includes procedures for fracture repairs, elbow or hip dysplasia, patellar luxation (kneecap dislocation), and ligament repair.

What is laser surgery?

Laser surgery uses a surgical laser as a stand-in for a scalpel. This leading-edge technique has several advantages for animals. In fact, using a surgical laser reduces pain (during and after the surgery), post-surgical inflammation, the size of the incision and the scar, blood loss and the risk of infection.

All these advantages also allow your pet to recover and get back to their normal routine faster after surgery. The surgical laser cannot be used for all types of surgical interventions. Talk to your veterinarian to find out whether it can be used for your pet’s procedure.
