A microchip is a device the size of a grain of rice that contains a unique identification number and is inserted under the animal’s skin. It’s very useful when trying to identify an animal that’s been lost. However, a microchip is not a GPS. It allows an animal to be identified, but not found.

What are the benefits of microchipping my pet?

The microchip is designed to stay in place until the end of your pet’s life meaning it’s a permanent way of identifying your beloved companion. Since the microchip is placed under the animal’s skin, it can’t be lost and can’t be felt. If your pet gets lost and someone brings them to an SPCA, a shelter, or a veterinary clinic, the staff there can use a microchip scanner to identify your pet and contact you quickly to come pick them up.

Is the microchip dangerous for my pet?

Microchips are not dangerous because they are made from sterile, biocompatible materials. They are inserted under the animal’s skin by a veterinarian using a syringe.
