Vaccinations for Puppies and Dogs

Vaccination is a standard of care that’s needed to keep our pets healthy.

Several vaccines are available, and it’s possible to combine different of them to better meet the needs of our pets. Vaccination is especially important for puppies because their immune system is not yet fully developed, placing them at greater risk of contracting certain diseases. Vaccination allows them to create antibodies in order to fight off the various diseases they could be exposed to.

If you want to travel with your pet, you will probably need to have them vaccinated, as many countries require vaccinations to prevent the spread of disease. Some kennels also require that pets be vaccinated.

What is the main vaccine for dogs?

The main vaccine for dogs, called DHPP, protects against four very serious diseases. They are canine distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, and parvovirus.

What other vaccines are available for dogs?

• Leptospirosis vaccine
• Lyme disease vaccine
• Rabies vaccine
• Bordetella vaccine (kennel cough)

How often do dogs need to be vaccinated?

The vaccination schedule for puppies should start at around 6-8 weeks of age and go as follows:

• 6-8 weeks: DHPP
• 12 weeks: DHPP, leptospirosis, Lyme disease
• 16 weeks: DHPP, leptospirosis, Lyme disease, rabies, Bordetella

Adult dogs should be vaccinated annually or every two years, depending on the vaccination schedule chosen. Your veterinarian will be able to tell you exactly how often your dog should be vaccinated.
